How to Apply False Eyelashes
By Genae-Valecia Hinesman
Overview
False eyelashes are cosmetic accessories used to add dramatic fullness and length to eyes. By acting as a "frame" for the eyes, they help to accentuate and draw attention to their color and shape. Dramatic doesn't have to mean costume-like, however. The instructions provided in this article will help you to apply full false eyelashes (as opposed to individual ones) that will add thickness to your eyelashes, yet look as natural as possible. To avoid damage to or loss of your natural eyelashes, instructions for their safe removal have also been included with the application information.
Step 1
Set aside ample time to practice applying and wearing false lashes, well in advance of using them for a special event. Although care has been taken in simplifying the directions for applying false eyelashes, using them for the first time may still seem awkward.
Step 2
Wash your hands well and be sure that the area beneath your fingernails is also clean. Open the tube of eyelash adhesive glue. Carefully set both the tube and the cap of the tube aside, without squeezing it. Remove a false eyelash strip from its container. If the strip is too long for your eyes, you may use small scissors to trim it, or cut one strip in half and apply only to the outer edge of your lashes if full coverage isn't needed.
Step 3
Use tweezers to help you to grasp the strip. Pick up the tube of glue with your free hand and squeeze a small amount onto the band of the false eyelashes. Put down the tube of glue and spread the glue along the band with the aid of a toothpick.
Step 4
Allow five seconds to pass while the glue becomes viscous. Gently align the eyelash band with your natural eyelashes. Press from the inside of your eyes (near your nose) to the outside (near your temples). Hold the lash band in place until it begins to adhere. This should take at least three seconds. The glue will dry clear.
Step 5
Repeat this process, using the other strip of false eyelashes on your other eye. Replace the cap of the tube of eyelash glue/adhesive. Store in a cool and dry location.
Step 6
Curl your natural and false eyelashes together with an eyelash curler. Apply liquid eyeliner close to the eyelash bands on your upper eyelids to further help disguise and blend in your false eyelashes with your natural ones. You may add mascara to your lower natural lashes if you prefer, but it generally is not needed over false eyelashes.
Step 7
Remove your false eyelashes by using a sterile cotton ball that has been moistened with eye makeup remover. Press it gently against your upper eyelids, permitting it to soak the false eyelashes for a few seconds to loosen the dried glue. Grasp a corner of the lash band and gently pull off the false eyelashes.
